VoIP handsets require two things. A connection to the internet, via a network cable or network switch going into your broadband router.

 Followed by some configuration details that must be inputted into your router / firewall. These settings allow the VoIP traffic to travel through your router / firewall correctly and not cause any problems with the call quality or functionality of your handsets, mobile apps or desktop apps.
